This is a question raised on a FB fan page that intrigued me and I am hoping for better light here. It was pointed out that there are several differences in Chapters 1-5 of the book Two Kinds of Truth when comparing the promo version at the end of the book The Late Show and the full version of the actual book, Two Kinds of Truth. Here is an example:

Promo version at rear of The Late Show, p 4: "Soto gave Bosch a look that seemed to impart the message that she was under the D.A.'s thumb on this case. He stepped out of the cell, closed the metal door, and locked it with a long jail guard's key that he put in his pocket."

Final version from Two Kinds of Truth, p 7: "Soto gave Bosch a look that seemed to impart the message that she was under the D.A.'s thumb on this case. He grabbed his keys and padlock off the desk, stepped out of the cell, and then slid the metal door closed with a heavy clang. The key to the cell had disappeared long ago and Bosch wrapped a bicycle chain around the bars and secured the door with a padlock."

Pretty interesting change!  Using that as an example, I'd love to know what led to the change. For example, who advised the change, at what stage, and why? Or any other interesting details.

And a followup question to Jane - I notice that you are included in the Acknowledgements in all of the more recent books. Naturally, MC is not specific in the Acknowledgements, but do you read all of the books in draft stage and participate in the feedback loop? What is that like?

A preview excerpt may go into a prior book before all the final editing takes place in the new book. It's really all about timing--when it's needed versus when it's finished.  I would say always re-read the chapters once the book comes out!

I do read the manuscripts in advance. It's an honor and one of my favorite parts of my job!

I've never seen any promo versions at the ends of prior books...

Andrea, they are in eBooks and some paperbacks. Usually never in a hardcover.
