It was really hard to put an order to these because all of them were so good.

1. She Rides Shotgun by Jordan Harper

2. Afterlife by Marcus Sakey

3. Desperation Road by Michael Farris Smith

4. Two Kinds of Truth by Michael Connelly

5. Since We Fell by Dennis Lehane

6. The Weight of This World by David Joy

7. The Ridge by John Rector

I read 60 books in 2017, 11 of those were 2017 releases, 3 of those were 5 star reads, my favourite was easily Crossing The Animas by James D Best but as it is number 6 in a series I won’t put it at number 1 as you really need to read the first 5 to appreciate it fully, so having said all that, my choices are these.

1. Two Kinds Of Truth - Michael Connelly
2. Crossing The Animas - James D Best
3. Parting Shot - Linwood Barclay
4. Knife Creek - Paul Doiron
5. The Dry - Jane Harper
6. Desperation Road - Michael Farris Smith
7. The Wanted - Robert Crais
8. Golden Prey - John Sandford
9. The Late Show - Michael Connelly
10. Faithful - Alice Hoffman

ps - I’m disappointed not to have read Deep Dark Descending, I feel that might have been up there but I have been on the library waiting list since October for that one, must be popular. Also Child Finder sounds great.

Jackmeister - I show Faithful was Keys pick for the 2016 Golden Post so not sure if it is 2017 release.

True, but it is not her pick and she didn't give it 5 stars.

The Steve Dancy series is really good, and I gave Crossing the Animas 5 stars also. I have stayed away from listing westerns and maybe that is a mistake as it short changes some really good authors. This is a more eclectic group than it used to be.

Two Kinds Of Truth is MCs best book in years, but my personal opinion is that he should not be eligible. He already has an inside track and a head start.

That’s weird, in my 2017 Goodreads bookshelf it says Faithful is published Feb 9 2017 but when you go into the book it says Nov 1st 2016, never mind just forget it.

It probably depends on the format and the country. In the US, Faithful came out in hardcover on Nov 1, 2016. Moot point. Go Crows!

Thanks Jeff for the update. I've had some work and family issues so I apologize for not posting the finalists sooner. The addition to list Jeff compiled is Desperation Road by Michael Farris Smith which makes the finals as the top votegetter without a 1st place vote. It was added because one of the finalist received 2 first place votes. So let's start reading the finalists! I recently read Afterlife which was impressive but not my cup of tea, so just 3 more to read for me. We will vote in April. Here are the finalists:
  • Afterlife by Marcus Sakey
  • The Child Finder by Rene Denefeld
  • The Phaistos Paragon by Nate Granzow
  • The Late Show by MC
  • Bloody January - Alan Parks
  • The Smack - Richard Lange
  • Two Kinds Of Truth - Michael Connelly
  • She Rides Shotgun by Jordan Harper
  • Desperation Road by Michael Farris Smith
PS the other book that received many votes but no first place votes was Deep Dark Descending by Allen Eskenes.

So, can we vote for Deep Dark Descending, or was that just a side bar?

Just so we don't have to go back and look it up, we give 9 points to our #1 choice, 8 points to our #2 choice, 7 points to our #3 choice, etc.?

For finalist voting you will pick your top 3 books I'll assign 5 points for 1st, 3 points for 2nd and 1 point for third that should lessen the chance for ties. 1st tie breaker will be most # of ballots appearing on. 2nd tiebreaker will be revote between tied books with similar point structure.

I'm pleased to announce another fantastic book has won the Golden Post Award! She Rides Shotgun by Jordan Harper was a clear choice in the voting. I sent Jordan a friend request on facebook just now. Has anybody corresponded with him previously?

The Golden Post Award was started in 2010 when a group of crime fiction lovers who frequently posted on the Michael Connelly website, decided to recognize their favorite book of the year. It’s become a yearly tradition to nominate favorite reads, vote on finalists and after a pause to hopefully read the finalists, select a winner. Although the award carries much prestige the monetary compensation is somewhat wanting (I always offer to buy the winner a drink the next time they are in Mpls). She Rides Shotgun continues a tradition of our goal of rewarding writing with rich character development, important themes and an enticing plot.

 Golden Post Winners

2010 The Lock Artist by Steve Hamilton

2011 The Cypress House by Michael Koryta

2012 Capture by Roger Smith

2013 The Last Whisper in the Dark by Tom Piccirilli

2014 The Burning Room by Michael Connelly

2015 Paradise Sky by Joe Lansdale

2016 Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk

2017 She Rides Shotgun by Jordan Harper

BTW The Child Finder and Desperation Road had 15 and 13 points respectively to She Rides Shotgun's 24 points.
BTBTW For some reason the paperback version released in March is called A Lesson in Violence, I almost bought it, I wonder if that will be the title of the movie that Jordan is writing based on the award winning book.

Thanks Travis for coordinating one of the reading highlights of the year.  Do we all prefer the current structure?  I would be good with going back to a group of 5-6 finalists.  Just getting some feedback out there now since it is still relatively fresh.
