I've only been to one this year so far but I go to watch my local state footy team Norwood play each week.

I'm happy to announce that the winner of the 2016 Golden Post is... well we have a tie. I researched every year of the Golden Post threads and never found a tie-breaker procedure for the finals. I thought I remembered saying the most 1st place votes wins but there is not a post saying so. When we had a tie in nominating we've added an extra book, so that is sort of a precedent.

My suggestion is that we have co-winners, there is certainly precedent in other awards for artists to share awards. I don't want this to be just my choice though. We had 10 people vote so I would like to get 5 more endorsements here for co-winners, giving us a majority. If we don't get 6 in favor then we will vote between co-winners and most 1st place votes.

Sound fair?

Co-Winners sounds fair to me.  There were a lot of deserving books this year.

My vote is for a single winner. The Superbowl does not end in a tie.

I'm good either way so I guess majority rules.

The passion for a single winner has swayed me.  I'll change my vote to a single winner as well.

Well the people have spoken we will have a single winner.

People brought up a playoff and the problem as I see it, is a playoff really distorts the statistics. For example previously a first place vote was 3 points and a 7th place vote was 0 points. Now it's 1 point vs 0 points. Also we will potentially have people voting on books they have not read. I like the idea of weighting 1st place votes higher than 2nd and 2nd higher than 3rd. I should have done 5 points for 1st, 3 points for 2nd and 1 point for 3rd. Although it looks the same, in this system 1st place vote counts more than a combined 2nd and 3rd.

Enough of me pointing out the limitations of a playoff, it sounds like there is some support for a playoff so let's vote on 2 options to break the tie.
  • Most 1st place votes
  • Playoff - everyone votes for either of the 2 books or they can choose to abstain
Feel free to vote here or by private message.

Travis,   my vote is whatever you decide to do,   ill be happy either way.   You have done most of the legwork on this for the many years,  so my vote is you decide how we break it.   ill be happy either way.     thanks again for organizing this again this year,  its a ton of fun and i look forward to it each year.

Sorry, I'm making this more complicated, first we are voting on how to settle the tie:

let's vote on 2 options to break the tie.
  • Most 1st place votes
  • Playoff - everyone votes for either of the 2 books or they can choose to abstain

I would like to see just one winner, but agree with Mr. Hughes' son. Travis does all the work. Whatever he decides is fine.

Travis snuck in there while I was commenting. My vote, then is option two, vote for only one of the two or abstain

And now after all those nice words I'm going to reverse myself and go with a playoff!!

The 2 finalists that tied with 9 points are:

Dark Matter
Wolf Hollow

Please vote by private message and consider casting an abstain vote if you have not read either of the books or don't have a preference.

The results of the playoff are in! The winner is... we have another tie! I figured it would come down to the 4 people that did not list either book in their top 3 and sure enough 2 people voted for each.

We could go with the most 1st place votes as a tiebreaker but for me that feels a bit like making rules after the game has been played but I'm fine with going with the majority. So let me know if you prefer:
- Co-winners
- Tiebreaker of most 1st place votes

Feel free to vote here or my private message. If this vote is a tie we are going with co-winners ;)

I will abstain. Neither one of those got me all that involved. If nobody else abstains, it shouldn't end in a tie. If it does I agree- Co-winners

I just need a couple more votes, from Betty, Keys, Gishgal1, MikeO and we can end this neverending process ;)

I am so confused.  I guess my vote is go for the one with the most first place votes.  Unless I am supposed to be voting for a title again?

I'm not surprised you're confused ;) We now have enough people voting that most 1st place votes wins (6-1 with 3 votes outsatanding). So the 2017 Golden Post Award goes to Lauren Wolk for Wolf Hollow. I would like to award Golden Post Award Honors to Blake Crouch for Dark Matter. Honors will be awarded whenever we have to go to a tiebreaker (the tiebreaker will follow the system we developed this year). I'll write a more formal announcement later.

I want to thank everyone for their patience, hopefully we now have a system that will operate smoothly in the future.

I wanted to break the tie so glad we did. I was trying to think of another way but never came up with something to share. Maybe we should go back to the other format for next year.
