harry Bosch was born in 1950 so in the first book 'the black echo' bosch would have been 42.

description of him from the book the black echo:

'Harry was not a big man. He stood a few inches short of 6 feet and was built lean. The newspapers, when they described him called him wiry. beneath the jumpsuit his muscles were like nylon chords. strength concealed by economy of size. The gray that flecked his hair was more partial to the left side. His eyes were brown/black and seldom betrayed emotion or intention.'

he hasn't ever been described as this drop dead gorgeous guy either so i do think that should rule out your brad pitt, clive owen and george clooney types etc

i wouldn't suggest anyone morbidly obese or anyone overly muscular and beefed up because that's not how the character is described.

i always imagine jeremy davies aka daniel faraday from 'lost' as harry bosch. he is 43 and 5.9, lean and scruffy. i like the idea of billy burke playing him too.

i know his hair might be a bit too long here and he has more of a full beard going on but give him a break, he was trapped on an island lol...

I've been watching Revolution and now my son's pointed out that one of the main characters is the Dad in Twilight and I'd read Michael Connelly had seen him as Bosch (Billy Burke) - so that's now who I picture in the books - he has the look, style and loner thing about him.

Has to be someone who is tough, sort of a loner-type, gritty but not pretty (NO METROSEXUAL TYPES), old fashioned hero. Bill Burke is too pretty and I can't even wrap my mind around Daniel Faraday Lost guy playing him. He looks like a little wuss. Just my two cents. Here would be my short list.

Russell Crowe (sort of like Cal McCaffrey he played in State of Play)
Hugh Jackman
David Morse
Mel Gibson
I like the Tommy Lee Jones suggestion earlier too.

I too have read all the HB novels except the most recent one.  I always picture James Belluchi when I am reading Harry.  I think Clive Owen is too menacing.  But Tom Cruise as Reacher!  Please!

Not, no, never Clint Eastwood who starred in the Hollywood hijacking of MC's "Blood Work," but maybe Jeff Daniels?

Think Eastwood lacking empathy and Daniels to squishy.  Harry's an ordinary guy with a certain rigidity.  True to his own rules.  Loves his daughter and has empathy for failure.

Can't get a slightly stocky guy, in decent shape, with a good but undistinguished face, out of my reader's mind.

I have read all of Michael Connelleys books and no one could be Bosch but Billy Burke......he is so perfect it could have been written just for him. Hope is him in movie if one ever made

I have just read there may be a T.V series. There is one perfect man to play Harry JIM CAVIEZEL out of person of interest. Tall dark quiet and ruthless, trouble is he's already working!!!

MC has written an essay for Noir Magazine called "Character Recognition: the long and the short of the Jack Reacher--Tom Cruise Controversy."  I've read the article & the Harry Bosch TV series is in the works.  It's a great article because he talks about all the hassle Lee Child has gone thru w/Tom Cruise doing the Jack Reacher role.  Michael talks about the fact that he's in the same position.

For myself, I've read all the postings and have to agree with Gary Oldman, James Caviezel or Biily Burke (who Michael has mentioned in the past).  Too many of the actors mention are too good-looking - Chris North, George Clooney or are too old - Tom Selleck & Tommy Lee Jones.

If you can read Michael's article you will see where he is coming from in casting someone as Harry.

Got to agree with jadonnelly19 they have got to be the three on the short list (Jim Cavieziel no 1 for me!)

I think John Cusack would be good.  He had the mustache in the Raven and it an excellent actor and he is about the right age now.

I've finally found Harry - it's Michael Kelly.  He was in the Changeling and played a detective.  He fits with my image of Harry as a guy who is not typically handsome but is attractive.  A guy who has seen the dark side of humanity and has become cynical but still believes in doing the right thing no matter what.

Am reading the Black Box.  It's first rate - of course!

I just looked up Michael Kelly as don't know who he is. Usually I pooh-pooh names suggested here, but Michael Kelly is pretty close to the image in my head.

Most of the guys suggested are either too pretty or too ugly, or too young, IMHO:-)

Harry Bosch is hard to picture in real life.

Thanks for the feedback.  There's a scene in the Changeling where Michael Kelly's character goes from being hard-nosed, cynical and world-weary, to believing the truth when he hears it and then trusting himself despite opposition - Harry seems to go through that a lot in his travails.

I've read quite a few Harry Bosch books, and I've always imagined Anthony LaPaglia as Harry.  He's much leaner now than he was in Without a Trace and he's the right height.....plus he's a wonderful actor.

I haven't given this a huge amount of time and thought, but three actors that I thoroughly enjoy and are the proper age are Kyle Chandler, Guy Pierce and Hank Azaria with Azaria and Pierce probably being more of what I imagine to be more accurate physically in my mind's eye. Chris Meloni is another option that has crossed my mind if he let his hair grow, lol. Some of the big name Hollywood names being tossed around, while maybe good fits, are impractical because Movie stares are movie stars. However, It would have never occurred to me until I started watching The Followers, but Kevin Bacon would be a good Harry. He's about 5 years to old, but he plays younger. No, I think Guy Pierce and Hank Azaria would be wonderful choices (and hey, they have both played drag queens. Totally off topic, but just sayin', LOL.)

You know who I picture when I read The Harry Bosch series? Mannix. Mike Connors. So who is a modern day Mike Connors? And you have to remember it can't be one of the $10-$20 million dollar a film super stars. How about this? He a tad big for Harry, maybe a little old, but Bruce Campbell is the "type" I think we need. Is Rob Lowe too pretty? Or how about Emilio Estevez or C. Thomas Howell? Wait a minute! I've got it! Matt Dillon!

I suppose it depends on which books they are going to be covering, if the early ones then they need a younger actor, if the most recent then an older actor, if the latter my choice would be Tommy lee Jones.
Off subject a bit but I was watching The Lincoln Lawyer again last night and noticed that some characters called him Holler not Haller, as did MC himself in an interview on the special features though Mathew McConaughey said Haller. Not important just something I noticed.  FYI, Film even better second time around.

JOHN HAWKES!! Great actor, perfect build, close enough in age. This guys got the range to pull it off. Is this all just fantasy or has a Bosch movie been green lit?

I listened to The Drop audiobook (which got me into the books. Now I've gone back to the start to read them in order. Currently on The Last Coyote, fantastic book) so my Harry sounds like Len Cariou (which is perfect by the way) but I see him as John Hawkes for sure!
